Main Application Areas

Organic Synthesis Solvents and Catalysts

As a highly polar aprotic solvent, it is widely used in synthesis reactions for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, etc. (such as nucleophilic substitution, redox reactions), and is particularly suitable for dissolving polar and non-polar substances.

As a catalyst or co-catalyst, it is used in esterification reactions, polymerization reactions (such as synthesizing polyvinylpyridine), and can also serve as a phase transfer catalyst to promote heterogeneous reactions.

Pharmaceutical Industry

It is an important pharmaceutical intermediate used to synthesize various drugs, such as antibiotics (cephalosporins, penicillins), anti-tuberculosis drugs (isoniazid), antihistamines, and cardiovascular drugs (nifedipine). Pyridine derivatives (such as picolinic acid) are components of Vitamin B6 and participate in the regulation of human metabolism.

Pesticides and Dyes

Used to synthesize insecticides (such as chlorpyrifos), herbicides (such as paraquat), and fungicides (such as pyraclostrobin); the introduction of the pyridine ring can enhance efficacy and stability.

As a dye intermediate, it is used to synthesize acid dyes and reactive dyes for dyeing textiles and leather.

Other Fields

As an analytical reagent, it is used for the detection of metal ions (such as colorimetric analysis after forming complexes).

In the rubber industry, it is used as a raw material for rubber accelerators; in the fragrance industry, it is used to synthesize pyridine-based fragrances (such as tobacco flavors).
